ASI Logistics recently had the honor of visiting Yangshan Port at the invitation of the Shanghai Benelux Chamber of Commerce. This exclusive visit offered a fascinating glimpse into the heart of global trade.
Indeed, since 2010, Shanghai Port has maintained its title as the world's busiest container port, handling over 49 million TEUs in 2023, a 3.6% increase in volume compared to the previous year that showcases Shanghai's continued dominance in global maritime trade.
How and why has Shanghai Port risen as the world's busiest port? And what does the future hold? In today's article, we take a deep dive into the heart of global commerce.
What Drives Shanghai's Container Port Dominance?
Shanghai's status as a top container port is powered by its prime location and advanced infrastructure. Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, the port spans over 3,500 square kilometers and includes two main areas: Yangshan Deep-Water Port and the river port along the Huangpu River.
Yangshan Deep-Water Port stands out with the world's largest automated container terminal, boasting a capacity of 6.3 million TEUs. In 2023 alone, it handled over 25 million TEUs.
The port's impressive facilities feature 43 container terminals, 191 berths, and 156 container cranes, all designed to accommodate the world's largest ships. This allows Shanghai to efficiently handle a wide variety of cargo, from bulk and liquid to break-bulk and roll-on/roll-off.
In addition, Shanghai's port's high degree of automation and advanced technology, such as automated guided vehicles and rail-mounted gantry cranes, ensure efficient and swift handling of cargo.
The Heartbeat of Global Trade
Shanghai is more than just a port; it's a bustling metropolis where commerce thrives and the city's skyline is a testament to the country's rapid modernization. The port is the beating heart of this dynamic city, pumping goods and commodities through its veins to every corner of the globe. In fact, Shanghai's port processes over a quarter of China's total imports and exports cargo traffic.
Shanghai's success is bolstered by its extensive connectivity to international markets, with routes to over 700 ports in more than 200 countries and regions. Major trade partners include the United States, Japan, and Germany.
This extensive network ensures that Shanghai remains a critical gateway for goods moving between manufacturers in Asia and consumers worldwide.

What Does The Future Hold?
The Port of Shanghai continues to expand and innovate to meet the growing demands of global trade. The Yangshan Phase Four terminal is pivotal in increasing the port's capacity and efficiency. By 2025, the port aims to increase its annual throughput to 50 million TEUs.
The port also plans to expand its cooperation with emerging markets and sectors, notably other ports along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), enhancing its global connectivity and influence all the while diversifying its business portfolio.
Additionally, it works on enhancing its automation technology and digitalization to improve its efficiency and sustainability.
